SolaraPRO is a high-index 1.61 MR8+ photochromic lens manufactured by PR Optics in Puerto Rico. It is powered by the exclusive Spin Photo treatment, which applies photosensitive compounds directly onto the lens surface to achieve a fast, smooth transition from clear to dark upon exposure to UV radiation.

Darkening is triggered by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, not by visible light. That is why the lens works even on overcast days, when UV radiation is still present even if you cannot see the sun directly. Once you move away from the UV source, the lens clears on its own.

Darkening begins within seconds of sun exposure. The lens reaches its darkest tint in approximately 30 to 60 seconds under full UV exposure. The clearing process when moving indoors takes between 2 and 5 minutes depending on ambient temperature — in warm climates like Puerto Rico, clearing is faster.

The standard windshield of modern vehicles includes a layer that filters virtually all UV-B radiation and a significant portion of UV-A. For this reason, photochromic lenses darken little or not at all inside a car. However, SolaraPRO's UV protection remains fully active regardless, blocking 100% of the radiation that does penetrate.

SolaraPRO is available in any optical prescription: single vision, bifocal, progressive, office lenses, and also in plano (non-prescription) for protection only. It is manufactured on a high-index 1.61 MR8+ base.

With normal use and care, SolaraPRO lenses are designed to last many years. Photochromic performance may diminish slightly over time, especially if the lenses are frequently exposed to extreme temperatures or are not cleaned properly. We recommend using a microfiber cloth and optical lens cleaner.

Yes, temperature influences the speed and depth of darkening. In cold climates, the lens darkens faster and more intensely. In warm climates like Puerto Rico, the darkening intensity is somewhat lower, but clearing happens more quickly. UV protection remains at 100% at all times, regardless of temperature.

SolaraPRO is optimized for everyday use and prescription eyewear. For sport or wrap-around frames, consult your optical provider, as extreme curvature may require special adjustments. We are happy to advise you based on your specific situation.
